What a “biotype” actually means
“Biotype” simply means a group of people who share the same underlying biological pattern. Think of it like blood type: everyone’s blood looks the same on the surface, but the differences underneath (A, B, AB, O) matter a great deal for medical care. Researchers are suggesting ADHD may work in a similar way.
Instead of starting with a symptom checklist, researchers scanned brains and asked which regions were structurally different, and how those regions communicated with each other. Three clear, consistent patterns emerged โ patterns that also matched what experienced clinicians already see in their patients, which is part of why the findings are being taken seriously. This matters because right now, ADHD is diagnosed almost entirely by observed behavior โ what someone does or doesn’t do. Two people can look the same on a checklist while their brains are working in genuinely different ways underneath.

What this means for treatment
